Homemade Nontoxic Laundry Detergent Recipe

Square

Making your own non-toxic homemade laundry detergent is more sustainable and natural compared to plastic packaged conventional products. You can avoid irritating ingredients like artificial fragrance, coloring, and sulfates.

If you want to wash your clothes by hand, check out my post on How to Do Laundry by Hand | Sustainable Laundry.

Why use non-toxic laundry powder

1. Friendly to the Earth because it is chemical-free

2. Save money by making it in bulk

3. Avoid wasteful packaging from buying multiple store bought products

4. Non-irritant to the skin and more gentle for your clothes

Homemade Non-toxic Laundry Powder Ingredients

Washing Soda
Baking Soda
Palm-free Bar Soap (not required)
Organic Essential Oil
• Mason Jar (or any reusable container)

Steps

1. Fill up mason jar with 3-4 cups of washing soda.

2. Add 5-6 tbsp of baking soda.

3. Use a grater to add 2 tbsp of soap (I skipped this part).
4. Add 15-20 drops of organic essential oil. I used Eucalyptus for its disinfecting properties. I also recommend lavender and lemon oil.

5. Mix all ingredients and you’re done!

  1. Hello!
I discovered you via YouTube and love your channel. Would you happen to know if this detergent is safe for cloth diapers?
    Thanks!

    1. Hello, Thanks for asking! This recipe is non-toxic but you might want to skip the essential oils because some people are sensitive.

  2. Why do you add baking soda and not just washing soda and essential oil? Also, how long have you been using this recipe for?

    1. Thanks for asking! I use baking soda as a whitening agent but of course, if you wish, you can skip that part! I have been using this for about a year.

  3. I love all the videos you make and your narration is so good and soothing not just to listen but to watch also. Regarding the detergent I have a doubt , washing soda won’t it bleach coloured clothes so is this only good for light coloured clothes

  4. Can this homemade detergent be used in washing machine?:)

  5. Does it work efficiently ? I often use soap nuts for laundry but it’s quite inconvenient since I have to soak the nuts with warm water beforehand, so I’m thinking of changing to use you DIY laundry powder
